"Disciplinary wise" a most unfortunate week-end for both squads with the Seniors at promoted Claydon FC losing Joe Revell (two "yellows"), in addition to one or two further "yellows", while the Reserves, entertaining a very strong League "A" Old Newton FC champs' squad, suffering no less than five cards including a most harsh straight "red" for Matt McCarthy which, at 2-1 to our visitors, led to the lads rather losing the plot and the match finishing with a deserved 7-2 win for our visitors.
By all accounts the Seniors' match over at the "Circle", watched by a healthy crowd, was one to savour with the champs' of the SIL 1st Division extending for much of the match the champs' of the Senior Division. Indeed, the homesters were in the lead for a fair share of the proceedings by two clear goals but successful efforts by David Grimwood and two converted penalties by Liam Hillyard put Achilles in the driving seat only for a late "og", the second in the match, resulting in a 3-3 score-line - almost definitely a fair result!
Meanwhile at Salmet Close a most entertaining first half saw Old Newton taking a 2-1 lead at the break with James Steel, watched by his grandad Frank, finding the net after a fine home move. Sadly the proceedings were turned on their head by the most puzzling dismissal of Matt, to the amazement of all the players, home and away, led it must be admitted to our lads rather losing that pot and succumbing to a 7-2 reverse - at the very least our second goal was a "stunner" from Gary Grimwood!
Away from the park the 100 Club is underway and this week's two winners are former Achillians,
Norman Goodchild (No: 49) and Ian Rands (No: 39).
This coming Saturday the Seniors welcome Crane Sports to Salmet Close for what undoubtedly will be the usual hard fought entertaining struggle; while the Reserves have a blank week.
