Unbeaten Felixstowe Harpers were the visitors to Greshams this week for a Senior league fixture and the teams were greeted with perfect playing conditions on a lush pitch and a fine warm afternoon.
Both teams were almost at full strength and it was good to welcome both the ’old wind up merchant’ that is Pete Gorham and ex Crane goalscoring machine Tye Webb who has started the season well for the visitors.
As expected the game started off at a furious pace as both teams battled for supremacy, unfortunately nothing was being allowed to flow as proceedings were being constantly interrupted by the loud whistling, cards and lectures from the very officious referee, much to the frustration of all concerned.
After 20 mins things were starting to settle and we were enjoying a period of procession when a quick break saw Danny Allen go down in the area for a very soft penalty which Wilcox smashed in for 1-0 Felixstowe, but within 5 mins we were level with our own equally soft pen which was confidently put away by Teon Leggett.
We then gave away a very poor goal….as some of our players stood bemused at a decision, Felixstowe took full advantage with a quick free kick and fine move resulting in a tap in for Allen.
Again we hit back, this time with a fine turn and finish from Teon, then just before half time we were awarded a another penalty (no doubt about this one) which that man Teon again put away for a fine 15 minute hatrick.
So, half time arrived and a rather sadly despite five goals and some great attacking play by both sides the topic of conversation evolved around the referee.
The second half was a lot less eventful as both defences upped their games and most of the action was in midfield and the only goal came from a great Jon Ince cross and fine headed finish from James Blades which made the game safe for us with 15 mins to go, this then allowed Rads to give all the subs a run out and we comfortably saw the game out for a hard earned victory.
Despite Teon’s hatrick and a another good performances from Stephen Cole, my MOTM goes to Yarpy who was at his dominant best at centre half and capped it with a fantastic tackle on Tye in the last minute just as a goal looked certain.
So it’s off to Achilles for the toughest fixture of the season next week and with some vital players unavailable it will be up to the rest of the squad to be right up for the challenge.
Finally, best wishes on a speedy recovery go to new signing Sean Canham following his unfortunate recent shoulder injury and if anybody still wants to enter our Golf Day on Thurs 20th Sept at Rushmere this can be done by contacting any Cranes club member
