Achilles

With both the Seniors and visitors, Benhall St Mary FC, boasting 100% records it seemed likely that something had to give at Salmet Close last Saturday. So it turned out with our talented visitors fighting hard to at least share the points and a fine 90 minutes ensued but with no goals until just 10 minutes before time when a long clearance was headed on by Liam Hillyard for the "impish" Lee Grimwood to battle his way through two or three heavy tackles before slotting the ball home. Within a few minutes the margin was two when a fine move ended with Shaun Hanley's effort rebounding off Benhall's unfortunate 'keeper to enter his net just under the bar to seal another 2-0 home win.
Meanwhile, the Reserves were at the impressive Bacton United's HQ and took some time to settle down to the extent it wasn't surprising that our hosts were just ahead at the break. The second half was a rather different "kettle of fish" and the management duo of Chris Crick and Leo Wyatt made a few adjustments resulting in our lads scoring thrice to record a 3-1 victory and maintain their 100% record. Marksmen were Matt McCarthy, James Steel, and Ben Taylor.
This coming Saturday the Seniors make the short journey to promoted Claydon FC while the Reserves will seek to maintain their fine start against the Reserves of Old Newton.
Away from the park (as they say in Scotland) it's appropriate to mention the sad passing of Russell Berry who was a tricky forward with Achilles in the late 1950s. Rus' as most of us knew him was also a fine cricketer with the long gone, Greyhounds CC, and a single digit golfer at the Woodbridge GC.
A mention, too, for two more former Achillians, Norman Goodchild and Ken Saul who've had a rough time over recent months.
