East Bergholt United

Another Season Rolls on, We had some changes over the Summer, The biggest loss being the retirement of Gary "Flapper" Hammond an ironic nickname for a quality goalkeeper. He has taken a role at Felixstowe and Walton on their coaching staff. He has served as custodian at Gandish Road for several seasons, not just an excellent player but a dedicated clubman and a delight to deal with. We all wish him well for the future, and will no doubt welcome him back at Gandish Road in some guise or another, he is destined to Manage somewhere. We added to the first team squad bringing in Ben Prime from Grundisburgh, Aaron Greenwood from Kesgrave and Ethan Boon from Felixstowe & Walton, Josh Hayward returns from Coplestonians. We welcome former player Andrew Peck onto the coaching staff, running the A team.
Sharing a ground with the cricket club does cause some conflict over pitch availability, however there is the benefit of the cricket outfield being rolled and cut to establish an immaculate playing surface for Football. Gandish Road looked resplendent on a fine late Summer Afternoon as we welcomed Leiston St Margarets. We lost our opening fixture away at Felixstowe Harpers so were looking to kick start the season. We handed home debuts to Prime, Greenwood and Boon, plus Reece Hall in goal. Leiston had shipped 9 goals against Achilles the week previously and set up with a very defensive line up. It was a cautious first half for both sides and half time saw the sides go in level.
The second half was a much more lively encounter. A fine cross saw Ben Prime's quality header turned around the post for a corner. The resultant corner kick from Aaron Greenwood saw a Leiston defender turn the ball into his own net. Minutes later the lively Jack Spinner powered forward to provide a excellent cross for the impressive Scott Fryer to finish with some aplomb from the egde of the box. Ben Prime struck the foot of the post before his striking partner George Sherwood went on a magical mazey run culminating in him smashing the ball home at the near post. Leiston pulled one back, when we didn't clear a corner. Another Greenwood corner saw a bullet header from Tom Wilson saved, but Prime was on hand to turn in our fourth.
Andrew Eley along with his assistants Kevin Harrington and Mike Moir officiated the game superbly.
The first team travel to Benhall St Mary, whilst the reserves and A teams start their campaigns at home to Westerfield Reserves & Stowupland Falcons Reserves respectively.
