East Bergholt United
A decade ago, East Bergholt United vs Grundisburgh would have been an SIL Senior title decider. Things have changed, whilst we are in transition, Grundisburgh are fighting for to preserve their Senior status. On a cold snowy day the football played by both sides was easy on the eye and competitive. We had the best of the first half and were worthy of our lead, teenage midfielder Jamie McGrath turned in Dan Page's flick on following one of James Heathcote's many quality corners. I have said it before, football is all about scoring goals and if you don't take your chances it will come back to haunt you. Indeed Grundisburgh equalised against the run of play on the stroke of half time.
Grundisburgh buoyed by their equaliser came more into the game through the second half, we conceded pitch but did counter very well with youngsters Alex Biondi and Jack Spinner excelling down the flanks. We continued to create and miss chances but had a gilt edged chance to take all the points. Biondi made another spirited run into the box, clashed with a defender and the penalty was given. Heathcote bravely stepped up to take the kick but alas as two weeks ago vs Cranes it was well saved.
Grundisburgh showed fantastic spirit and neat style of play, they have a real goal threat in Rene Swann and some talented youngsters around him. They looked doomed in October but they could complete a fantastic turn around and stay up. One thing for sure is that in Micky Squirrell they have the best in the game to help them achieve it.
For us its just two points instead of 6 from the last two home games, we now prepare for our biggest game of the season Achilles at Gandish Road in the Bob Coleman cup Saturday 18th February 2.00pm KO. Achilles attack for fun and are a pleasure to watch, we will need to be on top of our game to progress to the semis.
I alas will not be around as i am taking a group of travellers to watch Ice Speedway in Almaty Kazakhstan.
