With the 1st team having no match on Saturday the Reserves were able to include Brandon King and Matt Rutterford in their line up, in a bid to win their first game since November. Also, returning to the squad were Jordan Phillips and George Baldry following their appearances in the Bob Coleman Cup the week before.
The additions certainly made a difference as they came away from Wenhaston with a 6-1 win. The inclusion of these players demonstrates how the Reserves have missed a few experienced players this season and is probably a reason they have suffered so many narrow defeats.
Young striker Kane Webster notched twice along with goals for Rutterford, King, Baldry and Ollie Butler. Hopefully, the lads will host Old Newton with renewed confidence next Saturday and avenge their 2-1 defeat at Church Road in December.
I watched a very good Club Colours Cup game at Copleston School between the unbeaten Yourshirts and Cops A Team. It was a tough physical affair with both sides eager to make progress. Cops had the better chances in the first half but it was the visitors who took the lead through a very soft goal. There was a suspicion of a hand ball and off-side as Cops stood still to allow the ball to bounce over Matt Gilson and into the net.
After the break the game looked over when the visitors headed in a second after a good run and cross but Cops fought back and scored with a great finish by Dan Driver after a strong run from Tom Baker. Cops threw everything at Yourshirts but the visitors defended well and go through to the semi-finals.
The 1st team now know their opponents in the Bob Coleman Cup as AFC Kesgrave saw off Capel 3-0 in their replayed game. It must have been disheartening for the Ploughman especially as his side had been leading 2-0 before the late abandonment of the first game between the two sides. I am sure that Kesgrave will provide a big test when the game goes ahead at Greshams on 18th February.
Next Saturday, after six away games on the bounce, the 1st team return to Greshams where they entertain title chasing Achilles, ko 2.30pm.
