East Bergholt United

East Bergholt United

Whisper it quietly at Salmet Close and Greshams but this Henley side could carry off the title in their first season as a Senior club. We have now played the three top sides and their is a similarity in all three sides a steady keeper, solid centre half, ball playing deep lying midfielder and a three pronged lighting quick attack.
We started our encounter with Henley in positive fashion as the burgeoning talent of 18 year old Jamie McGrath took a quality James Heathcote ball in his stride and volleyed into the top corner from the edge of the box. The first half was quite evenly balanced though Henley did miss a couple of gilt edged chances, Henley wanted a penalty but Toby Cousins saw Page's tackle as a fair one and awarded a corner. Bergholt will feel that the outstanding Chris Williams was lucky to see out the game after only receiving a yellow when elbowing Bibby. The second half was a different affair. Everytime Bergholt go the ball forward it came back from the commanding Aaron Sheppard, Liam Bevis was knocking the ball around with aplomb causing us many problems. In the Henley front line Clarke Bruce worked like a Trojan, Danny George had the best game i have seen him play, Chris Williams was on fire and destroyed us with his electric pace. We did have one thing in our favour veteran keeper Gary 'Flapper' Hammond was in the form of his life and denied Henley time and time again. It was ironic that a deflected shot finally pierced his defences. It was actually no surprise when Henley grabbed the winner with 10 minutes left. It was an entertaining game that was not all about the ref. The experienced trio of Toby Cousins, Des Haynes and Regan Bradshaw officiated superbly.
We didn't play badly and can take positives out of the performance, we welcome this Saturday to Gandish a resurgent Grundisburgh side. Micky Squirrell has won everything in the SIL but if he can preserve Grundisburgh's senior status this season, i think it will be his greatest achievement. I look forward to seeing him.
