East Bergholt United

East Bergholt United

The first footballing weekend of the season has passed with only one point being collected from 2 games and a difficult start for the first team.
With holidays and cricket robbing the side of many key players it was an unfamiliar first team line-up that made the trip to play Bourne Vale United. Our opponents were very keen to pick up their first points of the season and this was clear as they raced into a 2-0 lead in the first 15 minutes, that we never recovered from. Despite limiting the number of goals conceded it was still Bourne Vale that controlled the game and a third goal was added in the second half. Despite a late sending off we couldn't create many chances despite the hard work of Alex Cameron up top. I am sure there are better days to come and the return of our cricketers cannot come soon enough.
I decided to pop to Fortress Flatford and take in the opening game for our A side. This was in Intermediate B due to the league reorganising and us getting promotion which will certainly provide a challenge for our squad. The visitors were Benhall Reserves and I was frustrated to have missed the first 15 minutes and therefore the opening goal which went to our opponents. Despite much huffing and puffing we were struggling to carve out any chances so it was a bit of a surprise when we equalised through a Stephen Wardle corner that went straight in. The second half followed a similar pattern to the first with Benhall dominating the first 25 minutes whilst we dominated the last 20 but again couldn't make their keeper work. A draw was a fair result and one Gregor can be happy with. For me the bright spark was the play, on his debut, from Jim Evans who looked very assured on the ball and tried to make things happen.
This Saturday we welcome football back to Gandish with Old Newton coming to town. It is great to have them back as a Senior club and we look forward to welcoming them.
The Ginger Assassin.
