Benhall St Mary

Benhall St Mary

Well, we’re off the mark!
A goalless draw at Trimley Red Devils saw us pick up our first point of the 2019/20 season.
It was a fair result in a competitive game. While the hosts had the better of the chances, we enjoyed more of the play.
Passages of our performance were very encouraging, which was particularly pleasing seeing as we played with 10 men for 20 odd minutes after the sending off of debutant Panashe Mundawarara.
The clean sheet was certainly a welcome sight for the Benhall backline, who had uncharacteristically shipped seven goals in their two opening league games. We finished last season with the third best defensive record in the Senior League, so those first two heavy defeats certainly hurt!
We had the excellent Darren Warner to thank, who was in brilliant form for us - thwarting experienced TRD striker David Gibson with some quality saves.
Down the other end, we would’ve liked to have created more chances. At the time of the writing, we have only one goal to our name this season - a cross from Ryan Noy which somehow crept over the line!
Noy is revelling in his new right-back role and came closest for us on Saturday with a fierce left-shot that the home keeper Ben Punter got down well to save.
That said, Punter was a mere spectator when Chris Sillett’s well-struck free-kick whistled just past his left-hand post with moments left. It would’ve been nice if it went in, Sil!
But fair play to Trimley. They’re a competitive, well-drilled, hard-working outfit, and, with a good mixture of experience and youth, they’ll have a decent season.
It was a welcome introduction to life as part of our management team for Tommy Childs, who is stepping up to help us out. ‘Childsy’ is an experienced player who has been there and done it, so it’s great to have him on board.
Meanwhile, the Reserves started their Intermediate B campaign with a 1-1 draw over East Bergholt ‘A’.
Rumour has it that Dan Brown (or was it Dave?) played a perfect pass (not a clearance) for the onrushing Dean Flaherty to calmly finish like a young Salomon Rondon. Excellent stuff.
Both sides are fulfilling international duty this weekend, so we will be back in action in a couple of weeks…
