This coming Saturday sees the first team start their twenty second consecutive season in the Senior Division of the S I L when we pay a visit to newly promoted Bildeston Rangers. Its not been a good pre-season for our lads as they played three friendlies ,scoring one goal and conceding thirteen with last weeks planned game against Kirton called off as we could not raise a side. The main reason for this is that at least 12 players from last seasons squad have left the club for a number of different reasons including skipper and last seasons leading scorer Shaun Webb. These things happen in local football and those that are left just have to get on with it, with managers Sean Tynan and Nathan Burrell hoping that no more players decide to move on before the season starts.
Of course its not all about the first team with the club running 20 sides this year which includes 16 youth teams with more then 200 youngsters signed on. We are very grateful to all the coaches who give up their spare time to teach our stars of the future and we hope that they enjoy their football which is what it is all about.
Our Saturday reserves playing once again in Intermediate B will be run by Niall Lawrence and Alex Parry while Steve King will manage the Sunday Veteran team. For the first time since 1969 there will be no Sunday morning side as they have pulled out of the Ipswich Sunday Morning League. However all is not lost as we are starting a Ladies Veterans team run by Vicki Powell who may not be as good as our Sunday morning team was but as least they are better looking !
Off the field work has started on the clubs new car park behind the road end goal and this should solve the parking problems that happen mainly on Saturday and Sunday mornings at youth games.
Finally as we know life is full of ups and downs and just to prove that fact one week after I was awarded a rather large cup at the village fete in July after being nominated Villager of the Year I was informed by Ipswich hospital that I have prostate cancer which brought me down to earth ,but I intend to fight it for as long as possible. Up the Plough !
