Firstly, congratulations to Achilles on winning the Suffolk FA Senior Cup, a fantastic achievement against ECL opposition. Also to Crane Sports for winning the SIL Senior title after a superb run of results and Henley Athletic for winning the Bob Coleman Cup after beating us in the semi finals - they were clearly the best 3 teams in the league.
.
Cops finished in 5th place and were amongst a group of Clubs who challenged for all the honours but fell just short. There are some seriously good players in the Senior Division, so to finish in the top six for a third successive season is a fine achievement, especially as we have a very young side and had lost several first teamers at the start of the campaign.
.
During the season Cops managed to beat Achilles and Henley and came close to getting a result against Cranes, Next season we will be playing at Wanderers and with a couple of additions, maybe we can do the same again and win some silverware.
.
I’m sure you have all seen the news about the recent high winds destroying a stand at Wanderers. I can report that a few dedicated staff and supporters have all but cleared the worst of the damaged structure and a replacement stand will be installed.
We have also been working on the top pitch at Wanderers to make it acceptable to the SIL for our Reserves to play there next season. I went to a pitch renovation seminar at ITFC in the week and now realise that I need about £50k and a couple of tractors to do a proper job! It was good to meet up with Dave Shave and congratulate him on Old Newton’s promotion back to Senior football - always a top venue to visit. Dave told me that he had consigned his line-running trousers to the bin, so he can take a well earned rest.
.
Our support for a new 3G facility at Copleston School is continuing and we have a Race Night arranged for Saturday 15th June at the School - hopefully this will be a massive event and a great fundraiser! The Fun Day was badly affected by the weather so we could do with a successful Race Night!
.
I should also mention a fine achievement by Nick Mark and Neil Thackeray in their first season as Managers of the Reserves, finishing second behind a very good TRD Reserves side. In spite of losing to a talented Framlingham side 5-2 they bounced back to beat them 4-1 last Saturday to secure the runners up spot. Dave King bagged a brace with Chas Thorpe and Josh Smith also on target.
.
We thank Shaun Kirk for his spells as Youth team Manager as well as both “B” and “A” Team Manager who has elected to stand down and take a break. We look forward to announcing a new management team shortly for the A’s which has been a very successful outfit over the years.
.
It has been a big season for the Club, being awarded Charter Standard Community Club status by the FA - our thanks here to Dave McGregor and Dave Webb for their hard work in ensuring we received the award; also to all our Managers and Coaches for undergoing all the Courses required!
.
The Ladies and Girls section has had a fantastic season with several sides challenging for honours and the Youth Section goes from strength to strength and is beginning to produce the quality players we need for our ECL U18 team. The two Vets teams have done well this season with the 1st team challenging well against the stars of Whitton and Woodbridge who are the strongest teams in the Suffolk Premier league. Cops are also an accredited Walking Football Centre and we have some very talented old codgers who turn out every Monday night.
.
The End of Season Presentation Night for the Senior sides and ECL U18’s takes place at St Johns Conservative Club on Friday 24th May. Something a bit different this time with a Carvery - details are on the Cops website and is open to all supporters, officials, players and family members who wish to attend.
.
Best wishes to all the Scribes for their efforts this season - it’s surprising how many people read your notes and enjoy the news and reports. I will carry on but only if the Ploughman commits himself to another season! We ain’t getting any younger…..but still enjoy our beans.
.
Forza Cops
