Crane Sports

Our final two league games of the season saw home victories against Trimley and Westerfield to complete an amazing run of 14 straight wins which ultimately gained us the league title. An amazing effort by all concerned.
Trimley came out very determined and clearly wanted to avenge the beating we gave them at their place a couple of weeks ago but with second half goals from Danny Thrower, Mo Fike and a wonder strike from Jon Ince we won the game 3-0 with a fine performances from Ash Smith who was outstanding and MOTM and also young Ryan Davison who was unlucky not to get his name on the score sheet.
This set us up for the final game of the season against old friends Westerfield who included ex Cranes the Cooper Bros, Wade, Horn, Brkovic and Watson in their squad. This turned out to be a competitive game with some excellent football played by both sides in what can only be described as ‘changeable’ weather conditions. We took the lead on the 20 minute mark with a well worked goal from ace marksman James Blades shortly followed by strike partner and evergreen Mo Fike notching from close range to put us 2-0 up at the break. A clear penalty 15 mins into the second period saw Teon Leggett smash into the corner and the scoring was completed with another clinical finish by Blades to start his 30th birthday celebrations in style. We used all of our subs including old stiff neck himself Jack Foster who came on as an outfield player and showed his immense talent with Messi like (sorry…Messy like ) touches and nearly scored a ‘champagne moment’ goal with the last kick of the game as he ghosted into the box and with an open goal but miskicked into nowhere much to the hilarity of all concerned!! It earned him the MOTM award for that moment alone!!!
As you would expect Westerfield never gave up throughout, especially Deano in goal and were very magnanimous in defeat and all of their players and staff stayed on for the league trophy presentation after the game which just shows what a great club they are.
Great scenes after the game with the trophy presentation and players and management posing with their families and friends for numerous photographs. Greshams was buzzing afterwards with a full bar (again Westerfield and our friends from Cops joining in) with singing and chanting lead by skipper Mark Roper who clearly needs to get his application into BGT!
So Senior League Champions 2018/19 and doesn’t that sound good. It has been an amazing turnaround since Christmas where we were 5 points behind Achilles and there appeared to be a gap forming which would be difficult to bridge but all credit to the lads and management for putting together an amazing run of wins to bridge that gap and then go on to take the title with two games to spare. There were some significant, defining moments in that run in, with our seasons best performance coming away at Henley where we won with a superb tactical display and an 87th minute Mo Fike winner against Benhall away giving us very valuable points on the board.
We made a stuttering start to the campaign with some sloppy displays and it took time for the lads to buy into the new management and coaching set up, but boy they really made up for that towards the end of last year. Damian Brown and Paul Tiejen have been superb both in terms of commitment and experienced advice which has enabled Rads to have the support and back up he needed and that has meant that he has enjoyed this season more than any other before and has got his Cranes Mojo back which is great for the future of the club.
The players have worked so hard and at times ground out results when needed, but above all have shown quality which has inevitably won us the title back. Danny Thrower has quite simply been a class act and plays with a smile on his face which is what it is all about. Nay Woolard was back to his best before tearing ankle ligaments a couple of weeks ago and Mo Fike has shown what a great player he is both in terms of skill and scoring ability but also in work ethic and determination.
I could mention all of the players individually as they all deserve it. Bucky…an amazing season again. Incey class. Mark Roper class and a great leader. Yarpy power and commitment. Teon pace and power plus a great contribution of goals Bladsey with another fantastic goal tally, Jenno awesome since Christmas…and so on. But sometimes it’s about the guys who are not in the limelight every week. Lads like Ryan Davison who has been on the bench most weekends but has shown superb attitude and actually scored vital goals during the season, none more so than his fantastic brace against Claydon away. Your time will come Ryan and I know you are very much an important member of the squad. Reliable lads like Adam Glencastle who has been available to call on when we are stretched and never let us down with his calm and measured performances. Paul Hart again has always been there to help us out and what a player to have on the bench with his pedigree. The same goes for old war horse Chris Pratt…again never lets us down and a very popular lad amongst his team mates.
Thanks to all at Greshams for making it a fantastic football home for us and we look forward to enjoying many more seasons there in the future. Scotty/Chris/Lynne and their colleagues make us all welcome and have the best interest of the club at heart. Similarly Dean Mountain ensures we have a top surface to play on which makes a massive difference and suits our style of play admirably.
Thanks also to our ever increasing band of supporters…you make a difference, you really do. I know all the players look forward to seeing you on the touchline as they do club legend Watty with his camera every week filming the clubs achievements and making our very own VAR an interesting point of debate. Greatly appreciated by all at the club.
Of course there would not be a Crane Sports Football Club if it were not for the backup staff…. John Nunn with his hard work , expert first aid knowledge and cool head on the touchline, but most of all Mary and Lyndon Barnett our treasurer/secretary/chairman combination who work tirelessly all year round to enable the club run as well as it does….they are quite simply magnificent. Thank you both from us all.
Further things to mention are that we are reforming our reserve side for next season…details to follow and also that Cranes Youth (U15’s) have their League Cup Final this Sat 12th at Gainsborough SC 10.45 ko, get along if you can and give these lads your support, you won’t be disappointed!
Finally a reminder to all that our end of season awards dinner will take place at Greshams on Saturday 1st June and we have a golf day at Rushmere on Friday 28th June. All tickets available from Mary.
