Just one more match to conclude Achilles' 2018/19 season and, surely, it could not be much better than, the Suffolk FA Senior Cup final against Eastern Counties Leaguers, Cornard United. at Portman Road this approaching Friday evening?
With all the "ups and downs" of our season now ending it's certainly something to savour - a third position in the SIL Senior League and a second visit in three season to Portman Road for that coveted Cup!
Most, up to this point, has been well documented so far as Achilles are concerned and these brief jottings simply include a few words on last Thursday's "mixed" evening performance against Westerfield United and, before a well entertained crowd, the vastly improved outing for yesterday's home League match against the impressive Bourne Vale squad.
The Westerfield match at the Ipswich School Sports Centre was one of two halfs. In the first, initially, Achilles looked "world beaters" and fully deserved the two goal half-time lead. The second half was quite the opposite, our hosts took the midfield over, and were soon on terms. A scrambled third appeared to clinch all three points for us but a "gift situation" led to Westerfield drawing level at 3-3, a result they fully deserved.
Against this backdrop there was some doubt in Achilles' wider circle as to whether, with everything "thrown at us", the season had simply been too long and the League and Cup demands were taking their effect. However, comes Saturday's final League match against our close rivals, Bourne Vale, those concerns and negative thoughts were, surely, dispelled and a full squad, including three or four "plucked" from the Reserves, scored four (4-0) against no reply from Bourne Vale.
Now, just the "small" task for manager, Andy Coote, assisted by coach, Trevor Childs, and "top man", Jamie King to name the squad for Friday's Cup encounter. Remember, too, unlike the SIL which still operates "extra time and penalties" Suffolk FA goes directly to penalties.
A brief note covering the Reserves heavy defeat at Framlingham against their Reserves last week. Whether Achilles liked it or not there appeared to be little alternative to meet this outstanding fixture commitment despite, late "fixing", player unavailability and the Seniors meeting Westerfield the following evening. No real gripe just an explanation!
Finally, because of some of the problems outlined, it was difficult to organise a full annual Presentation Evening after the Bourne Vale match and so "full marks" to Andy and to Committee man, Simon Revell, who took care of the Seniors' awards, with a further (informal) Evening to be agreed for the near future.
