Mixed blessings for the Club last Saturday with the Seniors at a wind swept Greshams very much second best in the semi-final of the SIL Bob Coleman League Cup, one of three trophies being chased this term, while the Reserves continued their excellent run with a 4-1 home win against Bacton Reserves on a much more sheltered Salmet Close venue.
.It seemed clear that kicking with the wind for the first half "hostilities" could be an advantage at Greshams and our hosts certainly took advantage of that against an Achilles' side which, despite early pressure, involving striking the bar and a (deserved) disallowed goal, seemed to fall away against both lthe elements and the ultra strong Crane's squad. By the interval our hosts were three up in situations where, perhaps, we would normally have excpected better defensive work on the part of our rearguard.
It was obvious that to stay in the game an early goal on our part was needed - sadly missing and a further goal from Cranes midway through the half sealed their well deserved victory and every chance of holding on to the trophy against Henley.
All in all a disappointing afternoon but we take nothing away from our old "enemies" and wish them well in the Final.
Meanlwhile, a crumb of confort back at Salmet Close where that 4-1 win for the Reserves was well deserved and assists that late run for the Division "A" title. Marksmen were Carl McCarthy (2) and JP Taylor (2).
This coming Saturday just one match - a late rearranged visit to Haughley.
