Witnesham Wasps

Witnesham Wasps

On Saturday we played host to Ufford Sports FC who last time out beat us 1-0 in a hard fought game with both teams knowing nothing less than a win would do.
The game kicked off in typical fashion with the wind playing a huge part at either end, with long balls a plenty, but with the first chance coming to Ufford who got in down the right and their lively number 9 shooting low and hard for Martin to save well and tip round the post. Down the other end Wasps did well to make space and shoot against the bar only for Haque to put the resulting rebounding header wide when he really should of scored. The game then took a turn in the referees favour with Martin producing a good save to tip a long range effort over the bar, and the resulting corner floating over everyone and hitting the Ufford player on the back bizarrely resulting in another corner which the referee was adamant about. After the referee refused to change his mind, the corner was whipped in and headed in for 0-1 to Ufford. Hard to take right on half time as this was never a corner and the referee even admitting this to the linesman he ignored at the interval. Strange but the less said about this the better.
Second half began in the same fashion as the first with the Wasps not really gaining on their opponents and again Martin coming to the rescue with a good 1v1 save followed by two good saves down low to keep the score at 0-1. Finally a goal we didn’t really deserve with Danny Mac floating a great ball to the back post and Toby Rose again heading home for 1-1. Ufford didn’t let this affect them however and pushed for the winner with Martin again called into action to tip a long range effort onto the bar and gratefully collect the rebound. In all honestly the game was looking to be heading for a draw as nothing seemed to be getting past Martin who was in fine form until a long ball was allowed to bounce, and a mix up on the edge of our box allowed the Ufford striker to muscle through and lob Martin for 1-2. Another awful goal to concede but mistakes happen. We need to learn from these mistakes and hopefully be better prepared in the future. The action wasn’t finished there however with Shaw committing a needless foul in the box resulting in a spot kick for Ufford. Up stepped the Ufford centre mid to smash straight down the middle only for Martin to stick a strong leg out and save well to keep the Wasps in the game yet again. We pumped balls into the box using the wind but it wasn’t to be and back to back defeats came for the first time this season. Credit to Ufford who worked tirelessly for each other and deserved the win on the day.
Hugely disappointing result as we spoke about the importance of this game and knowing the team above us would hopefully drop points at some point, it’s just a real shame the defeat came with Tattingstone only drawing at Bardwell. A win would of brought us right back in contention but it wasn’t to be. We really didn’t create anything on the day and a draw would of been harsh on Ufford who played well, but we really do need to up our game in the coming weeks and finish the season strong.
Special mention to Martin who had a great game in between the sticks keeping us in the game time and time again, Keinzley and Haque who caused problems all day on the wings, and Captain Leach who was as solid as ever at centre half alongside Crowder. Also Clarke again did well playing alone up front holding the play up and bringing others into play. Free week next week so a chance to rest up and go again ready for Wortham away in two weeks time. Up the Wasps!
