Witnesham Wasps

Witnesham Wasps

Today we travelled to second place Tattingstone FC knowing only a win would do in order for us to gain that all important second promotion spot and close the gap on our rivals. As anticipated the first half started in lighting fashion with both teams going all out, with a few tasty tackles for good measure.
Tattingstone took the lead when a clearance was half cleared, and the Tattingstone number 8 smashed the ball low and hard past the dive of Martin. This seemed to kick the Wasps into gear and shortly after we were level when Ryan Clarke was sent through on goal, and a daisy cutter someone deceived the keeper who we think thought the ball was going wide, only to find the ball end up in the back of net. Danny Mac struck the post with a free kick before 1-1 became 1-2 when that man again Toby Rose pooped up with a great 25 yard free kick straight into the top corner to give us the lead at the break. We spoke about being solid at the back through the first ten minutes, and this worked until a goal kick from Martin fell short, and was headed on by the Tattingstone number 9 for their left winger to outpace our defence, and tap into an empty net for 2-2.
Unfortunate with the timing as the game was at a stalemate up until this point, and this goal changed the game in Tattingstones favour who then smelt blood. A good one on one save from Martin followed by an even better save with the Tattingstone striker directing a free header from three yards out towards goal only to find Martin somehow diving low to claw the ball away to keep the game at 2-2. Into the last five minutes and we were harshly undone by a cross field ball which found Tattingstones right winger who knocked the ball towards the byline and amazingly sliced the ball so much it deceived everyone, hitting the far post and somehow going into the net to send Tattingstone away with a win that both teams so badly needed. We did have one last chance with Rose smashing a volley goal wards in the final few seconds only for it to whistle just wide.
On another day we wouldn’t of lost this game and a draw probably was a fair result, but to concede so late on with such a fortuitous goal was a real blow, but with a game in hand and Tattingstone still to play top of the league, it’s all to play for!
Special mention to Rijan Haque who picked up the man of the match award running the LB ragged all game, and Ryan Clarke with a decent first goal and putting himself about all afternoon.
Next week we host Ufford Sports who beat us 1-0 just before Christmas, so again a win is a must if we are to keep the pressure on Tattingstone, who we wish good luck to for the rest of the season.
Up the Wasps!
