Just the one match for Achilles last Saturday when the much improved Haughley Utd squad were our visitors to Salmet Close. Sponsor for the match was Rosemary Shorten who, for a number of years now since husband John passed away, has been a regular supporter of the Club and, once again, we express our appreciation for Rosemary's contiued interest.
Haughley have obviously worked hard on the playing side of matters since their "rescue" enabling them to maintain their Senior status and it was clear from the early exchanges that our defence would have its work cut out in nullifying the quick breaks down both wings. As it was, and just to "ring the changes", a thrust straight down the middle at midway through the first half saw them go ahead to the chagrin of our supporters at the "popular end". Despite several half chances comimg our way the forwards were rather off target and Haughley maintained that "whiphand" up to the break.
The half-time "gee-up" obviously had the effect so far as our lads were concerned and almost immediately the scores were level when Gavin Van Oene found the net after a fine move. For a significant period thereafter it seemed that the tables were very much turned and further goals from Gavin (a penalty) and a superb effort from Connor Field gave us what appeared to be a winning margin. Haughley had other ideas and almost straight away a fine response brought the score to 3-2. The next ten minutes were obviously crucial and, once again, there was concern among our supporters. However, the lads saw the game out and, with the news that close rivals, Henley, had surprisingly lost at home, Achilles were, once again, top of the table (with games in hand!).
This Saturday the Seniors travel to Halesworth Town for a quarter-final tie in the SIL Bob Coleman League Cup while the Reserves, for the second time in three weeks, welcome Westerfield's Reserves, this time for both squads seeking top of the table points in the SIL "A" Division. Clearly with Achilles winning handsomely the League Travel Cup match in the earlier meeting, we go into this game with some confidence but complacency musn't rule!
Finally, as if these close encounters are not good for the system, the following Saturday Westerfield's Seniors will be with us at Salmet Close in the next round of the Suffolk FA Senior Cup.
