Old Newton United

After a decent Xmas break I knew we had a hard game in Bacton to start the New Year so thought a friendly would be good to get the boys some mins and and blow away the festive cob webs. Thanks to Ipswich Wanderers for hosting us at short notice.
Onto last Saturday, with a fairly strong squad this was a big game for both teams and if I’m honest it wasn’t the best, very scrappy. Bacton started well with the ball over the top which Jordi went to clear, the Bacton player came across him and the Ref gave a pen, which was well taken by Hitter.
Simo was giving Bacton a bit of a hard time and got us level with a well taken shot. With that I was hoping the lads would wake up and get going but yet again we went to sleep, Ross tripping a Bacton player in the box only for the player to carry on and shoot at goal, the Ref then brought play back and gave a pen, either you play advantage or you don’t! Hitter stepped up again and smashed home anotger decent pen.
Half time came and I asked the boys to give me a little bit more fight and work rate, which they did in the second half. To be fair to Bacton they held there positions and made it hard. With ten mins left I was beginning to think it’s not our day, Robbo was introduced which gave us a spark. We put the ball in the net, although the Ref then pulled back for a pen, couldn’t see what the difference was between playing advantage. Cooke stepped up and finished with the Bacton keeper getting hand to it. With 5 mins left the lads kept pushing and Robbo went down the right, put a great ball in for Southgate to guide home. A great feeling after not playing well but still getting the points. Fair play to Bacton they pushed us all the way and gave us a wake up call that we need to turn up every game!
MOTM was chosen by the supporters and went to Big Ash.
Donkey went to Jordi, we had to make most of it as its not very often he has a bad game.
This week we travel to Stanton, another hard game after they had a great result at Bildeston last week, so the lads will have to be on it this week.

Last week we had the short trip up the B1113 to play Bacton. Always a fixture to look out for when the fixtures are released!
If there was any doubt that the lads were still thinking about their Christmas Turkey then that was made clear when we conceded after 2 mins!
Fortunately for us, this gave us a wake up call and we bounced back to score 4 goals in 30 mins to make the score 1-4 at half time.
Unfortunately we had to take off a few key players at half time due to injury which killed our momentum and the second half was a bit of a non event. The game finished with a 4-1 victory!
This week sees us in County Cup action and a trip to high flying Bury side St Edmunds 65......... which looks to be a difficult tie!
