Given a recent improvement in results for the Greens of Wenhaston, including a draw against Benhall, Cops travelled to their furthest destination not really knowing what to expect.
.
The good news was that we had Matt Rutterford in our ranks, the bad news being this might only be an isolated appearance. Tim Street was made skipper for the day in recognition of his impending departure to train as a commercial airline pilot….flying the nest as it were.
.
Anyway it was fitting that Street should open the scoring and with Cops setting a good tempo it looked like more goals would soon follow. However, they didn’t follow and some dodgy self inflicted errors crept into the Cops game, not helped to be fair by a very bobbly pitch. The home side didn’t really bother Johnny Houchill but the game became very scrappy and a big improvement was required after the break.
.
Cops did then take control and once Tom Fowler had dispatched a good low shot past the promising Canham there was only one team going to win the game. Rutterford fired home an unstoppable shot before Kirk Ferniz scored only his second goal ever. Josh Smith wrapped up a 5-0 win with a well placed shot after a long period of possession by Cops.
.
So a solid 3 points which is all to the good, given that our next match is at Achilles, always a tough encounter.
.
The Reserves, back in action at last, also face a tough away match on Saturday as they travel to Trimley Red Devils Reserves in a top of the table, League A, clash.
.
The A team are on the road as well, as they travel to face Benhall Reserves - ko is 2pm for all the games mentioned.
.
A couple of stand out performances for other Cops sides at the weekend saw Cops Ladies win 2-1 at Leiston St Margarets, leading scorer Abi notching both goals. Cops Vets 1st team also won, this one 4-3 in a 7 goal thriller against Bury Town Vets; Bruce Rolls (2), Julian Beaumont and an oggie being the scorers.
.
Finally, a date for the diary is Sunday 3rd February for a Table Top Sale in Copleston School’s Main Hall, 10am to 3pm. There are sure to be some real bargains on sale as folk look to shift their unwanted Xmas gifts - it promises to be a mega event and tables at £6 should be booked quickly by contacting 01473 277260 or email dking@copleston.suffolk.sch.uk .
