Achilles

Achilles

Mixed blessings for Achilles last Saturday with the Seniors seemingly in a shallow Xmas trough after the home defeat by the single goal of the match against Claydon the week before, losing again, this time by two to nil away at the Bourne Vale complex against the Rangers.
This latter reverse was most unfortunate in that our hosts took the lead via an obvious offside situation which seemed to take an "early wind" out of our lads and, despite subsequent play shared between the two teams, it was the homesters who enjoyed more the half-time break. The second half was, again, a fairly close affair but, with a couple of exceptions, we seldom looked dangerous with the home 'keeper fielding comfortably anything we could throw at them.
The current negative phase is similar to our championship winning experience last season when, suddenly, two unexpected defeats threatened that situation. However, the squad pulled itself together and went on to finish top; there's everything to anticipate a similar development this season given that we give the necessary solid support from the sidelines!
A different story for the Reserves who welcomed Henley's Reserves to Salmet Close. This contributor left for the short walk from Salmet Close to Bourne Vale with our lads three to the good but I was totally unprepared to learn upon my return of the final tally - 15-1 to Achilles! The Seniors have two outstanding games against Henley's Seniors to fulfill and we can only hope that our lads at the higher level can follow suit!
Reserves managers, Chris Crick and Leon Wyatt, were confident that they were fielding probably the best balanced squad of the season but, even they were flabergasted by the goal tally. Marksmen were Ash Reilly (5), Matt McCarthy (4), Keith Grimwood (2), and Carl McCarthy, Tommy Smith (returned to the fold), JP Taylor, and Jamie Moran all one each.
The compilation of these notes coincides with the holding of Achilles' Xmas Lucky Draw to be held at the Pauls Sports & Social Club this Monday evening under the watchful eye pf club President,David Routh, who asks for any late counterfoils to be delivered by 7 30 pm.
