Just the one match for Achilles last Saturday with, in the SIL Senior League, recently promoted Claydon FC visiting us at Salmet Close, in a match sponsored by former manager, Alan Middle of sports goods organisation, Club Colours.
Considering the competing interests beguiling us at this time of the year a goodly crowd was in attendance for a match which would either confirm Achilles' continuing effort to retain the Senior League title or, indeed, register for the other competitors in the League that Claydon had arrived on the scene with a degree of determination!
In a "nutshell", although the territorial advantage was of the order of some 80% in favour of Achilles it was Claydon who took all three points from a plucky rearguard display highlighted by a magnificent goalkeeping display from our visitors' 'keeper and, against all the odds, our visitors took all three points as the ultimate product of a simple but effective header just on half-time.
What further is there to say (or type!)? Full marks to Claydon for their defensive efforts and the unexpected defeat was cushioned a tad when news came through that title rivals, Henley, had lost to Crane Sports. However, games in hand, will soon disappear if we lose too many of these!
Away from the park the latest wnners in the 100 Club have been No 25 Keith Flewitt and No 54 Simon Revell.
In addition a final reminder that the Club's annual Xmas Draw, supervised by President, David Routh, will be held at 8 pm on Monday 7th January in the small lounge at the Pauls Sports & Social Club. Counterfoils and prize donations must be in by 7 30 pm.
A Prosperous New Year to you all!
